It has been weeks since the start of the 2022 mackerel campaign in Asturias, although transport strikes and stoppages in the sector are slowing it down this year.

In Asturias, a participation of 172 vessels started with 1640 tonnes, which is 5% more than the previous year.

The provisional quantities fixed result from the allocation to Spain for the year 2022, taking into account the deduction for the fine resulting from overfishing in 2009 and adding at this time the surplus not caught in 2021 and the part of the aforementioned fine that can be deducted, according to the Secretariat. Although the globally agreed Total Allowable Catch (TAC) – 794 420 tonnes – decreases by 7% compared to 2021, based on the scientific advice available for 2022, the quota remains at the same levels as last year due to the overages from the previous year and the possibility of deduction of the fine for overfishing in 2009.
